It's time for patients and physicians to make a conscious decision around a core issue in our healthcare system today: personal care versus population health. The notion that we should align our healthcare decisions based on what's in our own self-interest (patient-centered) versus what's best for the population as a whole (system-centered) is perhaps the most significant shift and in my opinion, challenge in U.S. healthcare today. "New research shows that small primary care practices have lower rates of preventable hospital admissions than larger practices." This may be due to better physician-patient relationships that contribute to small practices being able to keep patients healthy.
